Link your Aadhaar with your bank account in under 2 minutes via net banking, mobile app, ATM, SMS or missed call — plus how to check if it's already linked using the NPCI mapper, and how to fix the most common errors.
Short answer: optional for banking, mandatory for benefits. You can operate a normal savings account without Aadhaar seeding. But if you want any government money — LPG subsidy, PM-Kisan instalments, scholarships, pensions, MGNREGA wages, or any Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) — that money is routed through the NPCI Aadhaar mapper, and it only pays into an account that has Aadhaar seeded.
One rule that confuses almost everyone: you can link your Aadhaar to multiple accounts for KYC, but only ONE account receives DBT money — the one most recently seeded on the NPCI mapper. If your subsidy suddenly stopped after opening a new account, this is almost always why.
Several banks accept Aadhaar seeding by SMS from your registered mobile number. Example — SBI: send UID<space>Aadhaar number<space>Account number to 567676. Formats differ by bank, so confirm the exact syntax on your bank's official website before sending.
Some banks offer linking or status checks through a missed call to a dedicated number from your registered mobile, or through phone banking IVR. Availability varies — check the "Phone Banking" section of your bank's website. This is handy for account holders without smartphones or internet access.
Three official ways to check seeding status — no agent or third-party app needed:
| Bank | Net Banking Path | App | SMS Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI | e-Services → Update Aadhaar with Bank Account (CIF) | YONO → Services | UID <Aadhaar> <A/c No> to 567676 |
| HDFC Bank | Update Aadhaar Card Details (post-login) | MobileBanking → Your Profile | Check bank site |
| ICICI Bank | My Money / Service Requests → Link Aadhaar | iMobile Pay → Services | Check bank site |
| PNB | Services → Aadhaar Seeding | PNB One → Services | Check bank site |
| Bank of Baroda | Services → Aadhaar Linking | BOB World → Requests | Check bank site |
| Canara Bank | Other Services → Aadhaar Seeding | Canara ai1 → Services | Check bank site |
Menu names change with app updates — if you can't find the option, search "Aadhaar" inside the app or use net banking instead.
