Before you close

How to close it

  1. Download your bank’s account closure form from its forms page, or ask at the branch. Some banks offer closure in net banking.
  2. Fill in the account number, reason, and where the balance should go (a transfer to another account is better than cash).
  3. Attach ID proof and surrender the unused cheque leaves, passbook and debit card (cut the card if returning by post).
  4. Sign and submit at your home branch. Joint accounts usually need all holders’ signatures.
  5. Get an acknowledgement.

Open your bank’s own forms page from our bank forms directory (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Canara, Kotak, IndusInd, Union Bank, IDFC FIRST).

Charges and timing

Many banks charge a fee if you close within a period after opening (often 12 months), and may not charge in the first few weeks. Rules differ by bank and account type, so ask for the charge before you submit. The bank should tell you the timeline for the balance transfer.

FAQ

Can I close an account online?

Some banks allow it in net banking or the app, but many ask you to visit the branch. Check with your bank.

What if the bank refuses or delays?

Write to the branch and then the bank’s grievance officer. If there is no reply in 30 days, you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman. See our Ombudsman help.

What if I have a minimum balance penalty?

The bank may adjust it against your balance. Ask for the final figure before closing.
