Students above 10 years can open a self-operated savings account at most banks with guardian consent. From age 10, banks like SBI allow minors to independently operate accounts. Full independence comes at 18 when KYC is updated with own identity documents.
Most student accounts auto-convert to regular savings accounts after graduation or after a set age (usually 25). The bank will notify you and ask you to update your KYC. Minimum balance requirements typically kick in at that point so check the charges before conversion.
Kotak 811 is an excellent zero-balance digital account for students who want instant setup. You can open it in under 10 minutes using Aadhaar and PAN. It supports UPI, has a virtual debit card initially and allows a full debit card after KYC. The Kotak mobile app is well-rated.
