What is Jan Samarth Portal?
Jan Samarth (jansamarth.in) is a Government of India digital platform launched in 2022 that brings all major credit-linked government schemes under one roof. It is developed by the Ministry of Finance and allows citizens to check eligibility, apply and track loans across 12+ government schemes — from Mudra loans to education loans to street vendor loans.
Before Jan Samarth, a small business owner applying for a Mudra loan had to go to a bank branch, explain the scheme and hope the branch staff knew the details. Now the entire process — eligibility check, application, document submission and tracking — can be done online.
Key difference from Vidya Lakshmi: Jan Samarth covers ALL government credit schemes including business loans, agriculture loans and livelihood loans. Vidya Lakshmi covers education loans only. If you need an education loan, either portal works. For any other government scheme loan, use Jan Samarth.

Requirements vary by scheme and lender. Mudra Shishu loans (up to Rs 50,000) often do not require a CIBIL check. For Mudra Kishor and Tarun (above Rs 50,000), lenders may check co-borrower credit history. Education loans require co-borrower CIBIL of 650+ for most banks.
Jan Samarth has 125+ lenders including public sector banks, private banks, regional rural banks, cooperative banks, NBFCs and microfinance institutions (MFIs). This gives applicants in rural and semi-urban areas access to lenders they would not normally have.
Jan Samarth is primarily designed for Indian residents. NRIs looking for education loans or business loans should contact their specific bank directly or use the Vidya Lakshmi portal for education loans. Some banks on Jan Samarth may consider NRI applications on a case-by-case basis.
