Who should use it: Any student applying for an education loan in India
What is the Vidya Lakshmi Portal?
Vidya Lakshmi (vidyalakshmi.co.in) is a Government of India portal developed under the guidance of the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Education and SEBI. It is not a bank or a scheme by itself — it is a single window platform that connects students to 38+ banks for education loans.
Before Vidya Lakshmi, students had to visit each bank separately to apply for education loans. Now, one application on the portal reaches multiple banks simultaneously. Banks review and respond through the same portal.
Important distinction: Vidya Lakshmi is the portal. CSIS (Central Sector Interest Subsidy) and CGFSEL (Credit Guarantee) are the schemes you can access through the portal. The portal itself does not give you money — the banks do.
What Can You Do on Vidya Lakshmi Portal?
Apply for education loan from 38+ banks with a single application form
Apply for CSIS (Central Sector Interest Subsidy) — interest subsidy during moratorium for eligible students
Apply for CGFSEL credit guarantee — helps get loans without collateral up to Rs 7.5 lakh
Track your loan application status across all banks
Download your loan sanction letter once approved
Submit grievances if banks do not respond
What is CSIS and Who is Eligible?

No. CSIS subsidy is a separate application. You need to apply for it specifically on the portal and upload your income certificate showing family income below Rs 4.5 lakh per year. The bank then verifies and claims the subsidy from the government on your behalf.
The college does not need to be listed on the portal. You apply with your admission letter. The bank verifies the college independently. However, CSIS subsidy requires the institution to be a recognised technical or professional college. Most UGC/AICTE/MCI approved colleges qualify.
