What is re-KYC?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is the identity and address check a bank does when you open an account. Banks must refresh it from time to time. If your details are out of date or you ignore the request, the bank can restrict the account.

How often?

RBI’s rules link the gap to the customer’s risk category. As summarised in industry guides, it is about every 10 years for low-risk, every 8 years for medium-risk and every 2 years for high-risk customers. Most ordinary salaried savers are low-risk. Your bank may also ask you earlier if your documents expire or details change. Confirm the current timelines in the RBI master direction or with your bank.

How to update

Open your bank’s own forms page from our bank forms directory (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Canara, Kotak, IndusInd, Union Bank, IDFC FIRST).

Warning: fake KYC messages

Banks do not ask for your OTP, PIN or password over calls, SMS links or WhatsApp to “update KYC”. If a message threatens to block your account within hours and sends a link, it is a scam. Use only your bank’s official app or website. Report fraud on 1930 or at the cyber crime portal. See our fraud recovery guide.

FAQ

Will my account be frozen if I miss it?

Banks can put restrictions after notice. Update as soon as you get a genuine request from your bank.

Is KYC the same as Aadhaar linking?

No. Aadhaar can be used as one KYC document, but KYC is a separate process.
